Liverpool John Moores University researchers found that people who drink less than 1.5 liters of water a day have greater levels of the stress hormone cortisol, particularly during stressful conditions.

"Habitual Fluid Intake and Hydration Status Influence Cortisol Reactivity to Acute Psychosocial Stress" is the title of the study. According to the findings, people who consume less than 1.5 liters of fluid daily react to stressful events with 50% more cortisol than people who adhere to the suggested hydration standards.

For the study, 62 healthy men and women who consumed both high and low fluid intake were assessed.


32 of them were split into two groups: equal numbers of those who drank a lot of fluids and people who drank less. Following a seven-day period of daily fluid intake monitoring, each group conducted the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) on their own. This test is frequently used in studies to create mental stress. It frequently entails exercises like mental math, public speaking, and simulated interviews.
