Plundering white stone in political agreement

The stunning white stones of Sylhet and the eco-friendly Jaflong are two of the top tourist destinations. The primary component of the two locations' natural beauty—the stones—has been plundered. The issue has already provoked a national outburst of anger.

The amount of harm to the landscape caused by the removal of natural resources during the previous year is unfathomable, despite the fact that their market value is approximately 600 crore taka. Environmentalists and government policymakers believe that the administration's hapless submission to political consensus is what made such a significant scandal possible.

During their visit, representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change and the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources have confronted the theft of white stone, one of Sylhet's most exquisite natural features. On the subject, social media is also very active. On the basis of consensus, tourists are blaming political leaders for the stone stealing episode. They believe that because of the heinous plundering of political party leaders, the playground of natural beauty has now become a desert.

Despite their disagreements about how to address the nation's issues, political leaders are in agreement about hurting the environment in a number of ways, such as encroaching on rivers, razing mountains, and stealing stones. The general public of Sylhet, including members of many social levels and occupations, hold this view.

According to a number of Sylhet environmental protection workers, stone quarrying in Jaflong and other locations in the area provides a living for thousands of people. In the past, they would gather stones from a particular location and sell them. Control of this company was transferred to powerful individuals during the previous Awami League administration. This transaction, which was worth hundreds of crores of taka at the time, also involved MPs, local leaders, and powerful Awami League ministers and leaders. Sheikh Hasina escaped to India on August 5 of last year, and the interim administration that was established bannedabout the Sylhet stone extraction industry.

Online Magazine was informed by a representative of the Mineral Resources Department that the ministry has implemented successful measures to safeguard the white stones of Bholaganj in Sylhet. On this matter, political leaders came together and opposed the ministry's choice.

Some sources claim that the Stone Excavators, Traders, Owners, and Workers Unity Council organized a protest rally and procession in Sylhet on June 14 in opposition to the government's decision. The program also included a significant number of political party leaders and activists. Acting President Rezaul Hasan Kayes Lodi and General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury of the Sylhet Metropolitan BNP, Amir Fakhrul Islam and District Secretary Joynal Abedin of the Jamaat-e-Islami Sylhet Metropolitan, Nazim Uddin and Abu Sadek Mohammad Khairul Islam Chowdhury of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Sylhet District and Metropolitan Chief Coordinator Abu Sadek Mohairul Islam Chowdhury requested permission to remove stones during the event.

Fakhrul Islam, the leader of Jamaat, added that it is time to look into the possible motivations of those who have halted the sand and stone extraction operations in this area in the name of the environment.

Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim, the senior Nayeb-e-Amir of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, called on the interim administration to permit stone extraction in Sylhet. He informed the authorities that stones would be extracted at all costs for the benefit of the workers on May 10 while speaking as the main guest at a local public assembly in Kanaighat, Sylhet.

Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad, the general secretary of the AB Party, had previously called on the government to open the stone quarries. "We demand that the stone quarries be opened in the benefit of the workers," he stated during a discussion meeting. According to ministry authorities, the local government has given in to the ongoing pressure from political parties.

Online Magazine was informed by a senior official in the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources that the upkeep of the stones in Sylhet was mostly the responsibility of our ministry. The ministry was promptly notified by the local government of the stone looting occurring in that region. Additionally, the ministry instructed the local government and convened multiple meetings. On the subject, the Ministry of Environment was also consulted.

According to officials, Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, Advisor on Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, and Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor on Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, traveled to Jaflong on June 14. In an effort to preserve the ecology and the natural world, they informed reporters that no stone quarry in Sylhet, including Jaflong, would ever again be leased.

Stone workers and political party officials protested by blocking the two advisors' route when they arrived in the district's Ballaghat neighborhood. They eventually returned to the city after evading the stone looters' protest with the assistance of police enforcement.

Jaflong is an environmentally vital location, Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan informed reporters during her visit. We spoke with the Ministryof Tourism regarding the development of environmentally friendly tourism in this area. For people who used to extract stones, this will offer alternate career alternatives. By safeguarding the environment, a comprehensive plan will be implemented for Jaflong. The local population will gain from this.

The location has been devastated," Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Advisor on Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, told reporters at the time. No stone will be taken out of here for the time being. The power supply to these machines will be cut off since the crusher machine needs to be taken out of here."

Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan then gave the Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet instructions to cut off the crusher machine's electricity right away. But the local government was powerless to stop the stone looting in spite of its orders.

According to the locals, there was chaos lately when the Vice President of the Awami League, Alfu Chairman, who is under discussion, took a lease to remove sand from the southern portion of the Dhalai Bridge and from the bridge's base and the surrounding area. They are destroying the Dhalai Bridge. Because of this, the locals are demonstrating and making human chains. Additionally, Maqsud Ahmed, the general secretary of the Sylhet District Jubo Dal, has been charged with providing the Alfu Chairman with sanctuary. The BNP leader Sahab Uddin Bahini, who is adept at stealing, has seized the chance as the people are aware of the Alfu Chairman and Maqsud. A festival of stealing white stones has begun. The local ordinary folks are now telling this story.

Speaking to Online Magazine, Sylhet District BNP President Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury said, "We have taken organizational steps against the offenders from the first day." This was in reference to the robbery of these stones and sand.
