Date of Trump-Putin summit; potential land swap
On August 15, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska to talk about ending the conflict in Ukraine. He made the statement on Friday, August 8, as he welcomed the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia to the White House.
Trump stated, "A land exchange, which is divisive to many, may be an option as part of a peaceful resolution. Russia will be our first target," he declared.

He did not, however, go into detail about any recent advancements in the negotiations with Russia.
"It is quite complicated," was all he said. However, we will change some and get some back. For the benefit of both, there will be some territory exchanges, but we will discuss that later or tomorrow.
Ukraine's and its European partners' positions
Any deal that would permit Russia to keep the areas it has controlled since 2014, such as Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia, has been vehemently opposed by Ukraine and its Western allies. However, Putin has stated again and time again that an agreement cannot be reached without the areas it has controlled since 2014. He has also urged Ukraine to stop its attempts to join NATO and to stop receiving aid from the West.
Concerns over the meeting's venue
Despite Putin's arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC), Trump has stated that the meeting will be held in Alaska.

The United States is not a member of the ICC and does not acknowledge its authority, despite the fact that Putin might be jailed if he enters a member state. Trump said on Truth Social Friday that he was inviting Putin to Alaska, despite earlier reports that the summit would take place in the United Arab Emirates. The Bering Strait separates Alaska from the Russian mainland, which is only 55 miles away. Trump thinks a direct meeting with Putin is conceivable here because it is the northernmost state in the union. If this meeting happens, it will be Trump and Putin's first straight in-person encounter since 2019.
